Susan is the sister of Barbara Haydock, the wife of Ian Haydock – co-founder of Derian House. Currently living in Preston, Susan is known as Auntie Sue to Ian’s daughter, Lesley.
Susan, of Preston, doesn’t do presents. Every birthday or Christmas, she asks for donations to Derian House.
Susan said: “Barbara and Ian said they wanted to do something because Derek didn’t have anywhere to get the help he needed when he was unwell.
“They were over the moon when their children were born and everything was okay, but they had a dream that they could make sure other families would have the support they needed.
“I just love the name Derian House – for Derek and Ian. It’s a lovely tribute. Every time I see the name it reminds me of the family.
“I feel proud when I see or hear Derian on telly. I remember I was watching Pointless one day and Steve Pemberton was on there – he said that whatever he won he would give it to Derian house. It was great to hear the charity’s name on there.
“Ian and Barbara put a lot of work into raising enough money to become a registered charity, and won the support of many over the years.
“They made it happen the old-fashioned way – just by talking to people.
“Derian House is so special. I feel very proud to know that it was my sister and Ian that laid the foundations for the wonderful, happy place it is today.”
