From creating eye-catching window displays, to picking out pre-loved gems – Derian House Children’s Hospice urgently needs volunteers to help run its charity shops.
And with a free lunch, travel expenses paid for, and a 20% discount in all Derian House charity shops – what is there to lose?
Charity shops are becoming more important to communities than ever due to the cost of living crisis, and with more people choosing to shop low-cost and secondhand, Derian House’s shops are in need of more volunteers to help run them.
Volunteers are being asked to commit to as little as one morning or afternoon a week to help keep things running.
Derian House has five charity shops across the North West – including one in Chorley town centre – that provide a vital source of income to care for children and their families.
From decorating window displays and organising stock, to being a friendly face and welcoming customers – there’s plenty to do in each of the shops.
The shops contribute to running the hospice, which has to raise £6million every single year to continue to look after children and young people with life-limiting illnesses.
Andrea Kilcommins, of Bolton, volunteers at the Derian Horwich charity shop.
She said: “I have always wanted a voluntary role for a few hours a week, and Derian seemed the perfect charity because of the wonderful work that it does for local families. At the shop I enjoy meeting customers – regulars and new – with a smile and a positive attitude. I make sure the displays are eye-catching and that things are kept tidy. We all work together as a team and support each other. Derian House is such a lovely charity to be a part of. I love the work – every day is different.”
Frances Lees, Volunteer Services Coordinator at Derian House, said: “Do you fancy yourself as a stylist or a personal shopper? Can you create eye-catching window displays? If you have a passion for pre-loved shopping and finding hidden gems and designer items – then this is the perfect role for you.
“There are so many good things about volunteering – it’s a great way to make new friends, learn something new, and do something for a good cause. It will cost £6million to run services at Derian House this year, and so our volunteers are vital and make an incredible difference to our families – we simply couldn’t do without them!”
Derian House, based in Chorley, cares for more than 400 babies, children, young people and their families from across the North West and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
